All passenger transport vehicles can pass through both tunnels.

The Fréjus Road Tunnel, opened in 1980, is 12.87 km long and connects France and Italy. A link between Savoy and Piedmont, it is now one of the main road crossings in the Northern Alps. It consists of a single tube with two traffic lanes.

The Mont Blanc Tunnel connects Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, in Haute-Savoie, France, to Courmayeur, in Aosta Valley, Italy. Upon its inauguration in 1965, measuring 11.6 km (approximately 12 min), it was the longest road tunnel in the world. It reduced the journey from Chamonix to Aosta by 60 km and, more importantly, eliminated dependence on the winter closure of Alpine passes, thus facilitating travel between France and Italy.
