CO2 Tax Germany – Austria
With the aim of encouraging fleet renewal towards ever less polluting vehicles, European Directive No. 2022/362 of February 22, 2022, provides, among other things, for the obligation to incorporate a taxation of CO2 emissions from transport vehicles into toll charges.
A “surcharge” of 200 euros per tonne of CO2 in addition to the existing toll has been announced.
Axxès supports you
To minimize the administrative management associated with the CO2 tax, such as the classification, registration, and invoicing of CO2, Axxès provides you with an Excel document that you can fill out and send back to us.
Without the appropriate CO2 classification, your vehicles will automatically be assigned to the least favorable category.

What are the key dates and who is affected?
Vehicles affected by the CO2 tax are commercial vehicles of N2/N3 classes whose technically permissible maximum laden mass (F1) is:
- > from 7.5 tonnes, on 2023-12-01 in Germany
- > from 3.5 tonnes, on 2024-01-01 in Austria
- > from 3.5 tonnes, on 2024-07-01 in Germany
Important: change in the definition of weight category!
Since 2023-12-01, in Germany, the weight category specified in F1 of the registration certificate must be used, and no longer that in F2.
This means that vehicles may belong to a higher weight category or be subject to tolls. Therefore, the weight category must be configured on the OBU according to the F.1 weight.
The toll exemption for LNG natural gas vehicles in Germany ends on December 31, 2023. They will be subject to tolls from January 1, 2024, but will have the opportunity to access a better CO2 emission class due to their low CO2 emissions.
What should you do?
1/ First, determine if you are eligible!
This depends on the vehicle’s first registration date.
If the first registration date is after July 1, 2019, a better CO2 emission class can be requested and registered with appropriate proof.
However, you must check each vehicle individually as they will not automatically benefit from a more advantageous class.
2/ Register the CO2 emission class for all your vehicles
You can find out today if your vehicle can benefit from an advantageous CO2 emission class, by clicking on this simulator.
If you do not do so, since 2023-12-01, as soon as your vehicle weighs more than 7.5T and you drive in Germany, you will be charged the highest rate.
By updating your vehicles’ CO2 data for Germany, you will not have to do anything for Austria on 2024-01-01.
3/ Update your badges!
As a reminder, your badge must always be continuously connected to a power supply. Update the weight elements directly in your OBU.
